Play this when it builds up. There’s another useful skill to be learnt here; slide to a note in another string. For example, instead of sliding from the low A up 12 frets to the middle A on the E string, just slide up from fret 5 to about fret 10, release it, and then play the middle A on the 12th fret of the A string. Less distance to cover.

To get it to sound right, you need to use a combination of left hand muting and playing some notes with the middle part of your third finger. This may take some practise. Notes in are played with the middle part of the third finger.

The notes in * are played relatively softly, not full-on hammered. Just touching it. Although it’s soft, they are essential to create a “smooth” transition from the low C to the middle C; mimicking a slide. This is a useful skill to learn if you want to go up one octave smoothly and fast. Sliding is slower and more prone to error because it involves movement of the arm.

Free Worship Bass Instrumental

Sometimes during worship, the atmosphere might build up and the badn can start doing “free worship”. This is basically where the band plays a series of chords over and over again in an instrumental session, and the people worship “freely”. Hillsong does this a lot.

The following is based on the common chord progression G - D - Em - C.
[Kenny: it sounds quite abit like Let Us Adore, you might want to practice this lesson with the song.]

I was just improvising some stuff, and came up with this. The timing is off at a few places, but I hope you get the picture. To be able to do these, you need to know the fretboard very well; scales and arpeggios. The key bit is that after “running around the fretboard” between chords, you must hit the next chord in time and it will sound okay. The (*) bits indicate where I have occasionally deviated away from this rule intentionally to funk it up.
