Play this when it builds up. There’s another useful skill to be learnt here; slide to a note in another string. For example, instead of sliding from the low A up 12 frets to the middle A on the E string, just slide up from fret 5 to about fret 10, release it, and then play the middle A on the 12th fret of the A string. Less distance to cover.

Here’s the song Only One by Hillsong United. I used a Tube Overdrive here, but other distortions should work too.

To get it to sound right, you need to use a combination of left hand muting and playing some notes with the middle part of your third finger. This may take some practise. Notes in are played with the middle part of the third finger.

The notes in * are played relatively softly, not full-on hammered. Just touching it. Although it’s soft, they are essential to create a “smooth” transition from the low C to the middle C; mimicking a slide. This is a useful skill to learn if you want to go up one octave smoothly and fast. Sliding is slower and more prone to error because it involves movement of the arm.
Here’s a pretty old song, by Delirious, but I’m sure many of you know it. I played the instrumental below, which is also used for the intro. I later demonstrate how the instrumental melody can be integrated into the rhythm guitar for the chorus.

I’ve just started work, and people in my country work for fairly long hours… I start at 830pm, and I leave at about 7pm… hence I have considerably less time to put up videos. Anyway, I found the time to do All I Need Is You by Hillsong United.. use a quarter note stereo delay here.

You might notice that the first three notes sound like that from Hosanna. In fact they are the same note, if you strum the notes together you get a C#m chord, as outlined in a previous lesson on chords on the first three strings. In fact, do check out the entire series of related lessons under the theory & techniques section.
Alternatively, you can use the next three strings:

I played around with a different set of chords in the 2nd half, to show how the chords on the first three strings lesson can be applied. I’m gonna exclude the tabs, to get you to master the lesson, because I think its really useful!
The chords to use are: E B1 F#m A2
Where B1 = B chord, 1st inversion, A2 = A chord, 2nd inversion.

Sometimes during worship, the atmosphere might build up and the badn can start doing “free worship”. This is basically where the band plays a series of chords over and over again in an instrumental session, and the people worship “freely”. Hillsong does this a lot.
The following is based on the common chord progression G - D - Em - C.
[Kenny: it sounds quite abit like Let Us Adore, you might want to practice this lesson with the song.]
[Kenny: I didn’t put a title and ending picture to the video as somehow windows movie maker distorts the sound for Bass Levite’s videos]
I was just improvising some stuff, and came up with this. The timing is off at a few places, but I hope you get the picture. To be able to do these, you need to know the fretboard very well; scales and arpeggios. The key bit is that after “running around the fretboard” between chords, you must hit the next chord in time and it will sound okay. The (*) bits indicate where I have occasionally deviated away from this rule intentionally to funk it up.
First round, just G - D - Em - C, then as it builds up…

Every bassist have their own “style”. I do a lot of hammer-ons and slides-ins. Develop your own “groove” and style instead of just copying other musicians. Have fun free worshipping!
